What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common and painful wrist condition caused by nerve compression.

The carpal tunnel is inside your wrist, where it joins the hand. It contains bones and connective tissues. The median nerve is a sizable nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel and into your hand.

If the ligament in the carpal tunnel thickens, it can press on the median nerve, causing carpal tunnel syndrome. The pressure typically increases without treatment and can cause severe pain and loss of function over time.

What symptoms might carpal tunnel problems cause?

When it first starts, carpal tunnel syndrome usually causes an aching wrist. You might notice this more if you use your hand a lot. The aching gradually worsens and spreads into your thumb and the first two fingers of the affected hand.

The aching can also spread up your arm along the median nerve. As well as aching, you might experience chronic pain in your hand and wrist and find it increasingly difficult to grip things.

Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms often worsen at night. You might experience pain up to your shoulder, and your hand and wrist alternate between numbness and tingling sensations.

The weakness in your arm and hand increases, too. It may reach the point where you can’t carry or hold objects, and even writing becomes impossible.

How is carpal tunnel syndrome treated?

The Advanced Neurology of Katy team must relieve the pressure on your median nerve to relieve carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms. Keeping the wrist straight reduces the compression caused by carpal tunnel syndrome, so wearing a special wrist splint at night helps prevent your wrist from curling over as you sleep.

You might also benefit from physical therapy to encourage the soft tissues to heal and strengthen. Steroid injections into your wrist can reduce inflammation and ease pain.

If these methods don’t relieve your symptoms, you might need to undergo carpal tunnel release surgery. This is a procedure that cuts the ligament compressing the median nerve. Carpal tunnel release can be highly effective in relieving symptoms and restoring function.
